About

Heyse Ip (b.1995, Hong Kong) is a multi-disciplinary artist working in London and Hong Kong. His works range from multimedia installations of video and sound to kinetic sculptures and performance. His absurd and humourous interpretations of banal and familiar objects create scenes exploring the power dynamics in urban ecology between humans and animals. Often by giving a voice to the animal or inanimate, he reframes our relationship with 'nature', in so he examines our own definitions and perspectives of humanness.

As a duo with the artist regiment, Heyse explores these ideas of humanness through site-specific sculptural and sonic installations. Their interest in the fundamental relationship between sound and space leads them to create different sculptures where the shapes, forms and materials are extracted from or mirror the existing architecture. Their performance of these objects are seen more as activations, and are mostly improvisational. Interested in a more object-oriented approach, these sounds, not being confined to a particular musical language, are a spectrum of innate potential musical qualities of the objects themselves.

Heyse Ip's work has been exhibited internationally including a solo exhibition, Capturing an Image, Lumenvisum, Hong Kong (2019), and group exhibitions: Often enough I tried language, often enough I tried song, but they didn’t hear you, Dystopia Sound Art Biennial, Berlin (2024), Pipelife, Medienfrische Art Festival, Tirol, Austria (2024), Untitled (Pipe Dream), Five Years, London (2024), Fishy Business, Five Years, London (2023), GRUND1535, Tirol, Austria (2022), Meta Alarm, Bermondsey Project Space, London (2022), Hurricane Hybrid, Montez Press Radio, New York (2022), Bambi Woods, Space 52, Athens (2021), D02.2, Plicnik Space Initiative, London (2020) Counterfeit, Bermondsey Project Space, London (2018). He was shortlisted for the Cob Award (2024) and was runner up for the Rossi Asiaghi Award (2018).

He holds an MA in Contemporary Art Practice from the Royal College of Arts, UK (2022) and a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Arts, UK (2018). He is also currently a member of Five Years collective.
